What you need to know about the Special Automobile Insurance Policy
What is a Special Automobile Insurance Policy?
The Special Automobile Insurance Policy, more commonly known as the Dollar- A-Day Policy, is a limited automobile insurance policy. Its coverage would be limited to emergency treatment immediately following an accident as well as treatment for serious brain or spinal cord injuries up to a maximum of $250,000, and in the case of death a $10,000 death benefit. The SAIP was developed to try and reduce the number of uninsured motorists driving on New Jersey highways by providing an option for those with limited financial means who might not otherwise buy a traditional automobile insurance policy.

Who is eligible for this policy?
To be eligible for a Special Automobile Insurance Policy, an individual must be currently enrolled in federal Medicaid with a hospitalization program. To determine eligibility, simply look at the upper left-hand side of your Medicaid I.D. card and if there is an asterisk after the card run identifier, you are eligible for this type of policy.

What would it cost?
The SAIP costs $365 annually, or $360 if paid in full up front.

What should I be aware of with a SAIP?
A SAIP does not cover outpatient doctor visits covered by Medicaid. There also is no coverage for damage you may cause to others or their property, commonly referred to as liability coverage in traditional personal automobile policies. Therefore, you leave yourself open to being sued by another party for these damages.

Will it cover damage caused to my own vehicle?
No. A SAIP is limited strictly to emergency medical treatment, and does not insure you against damage to your vehicle, as a traditional personal automobile policy would through collision or comprehensive coverage.

What happens if my Medicaid benefits are discontinued?
In order to be covered under a SAIP, an applicant must show documentation at initial purchase, and every renewal thereafter to continue their benefits under this policy. If the individual’s Medicaid benefits are discontinued during the policy term, the policy will not cancel, but benefits will be very limited.
